Emirates Network And Baggage Changes

A couple of recent updates from Emirates have flagged a number of changes to the airline’s operations that will affect passengers travelling to-and-from Australia:

  • Flight suspensions
  • Baggage allowance changes

As one of the largest airlines in the world, Emirates regularly updates its flight schedules, and this year it has done so to minimise the impact of the closure of Dubai International Airport’s Southern Runway in April-May 2019, and to respond to global travel demand trends.

“The changes we are implementing to our network schedules in 2019 are in line with this approach, taking into consideration global market dynamics and operational limitations including the maintenance work on Dubai Airport’s Southern Runway. Through the year, we will continue to keep a close watch on global markets and will maintain our flexibility to optimise the usage of our aircraft assets”, said Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline.

The changes?

  1. Emirates will suspend flights EK 418/419 between Bangkok and Sydney from 01 June 2019. Emirates will continue to serve Sydney with three non-stop flights a day to Dubai.
  2. Effective 31 March 2019, Emirates will suspend EK 424/425 and serve Perth with a once daily Airbus A380 non-stop service from Dubai.


Emirates has also announced a reduction in baggage allowances for ‘Special’ and ‘Saver’ fare types in Economy Class effective 04 FEBRUARY 2019. The changes are part of what the airline describes as a move away from a ‘one size fits all’ approach to airfares and inclusions.

The table below shows how the changes will be affect journeys between Australia and Europe via Dubai.

Journeys between Dubai and North America, where luggage allowances are determined on a ‘piece’ (not weight) basis are affected differently. These changes are illustrated below.

Free baggage allowance is dependent on the fare brand selected and can vary on inbound and outbound part of the journey. This information will clearly be shown on the customer flight ticket.
