EMIRATES UNVEILS PREMIUM ECONOMY

In a bold move, Emirates has unveiled a brand new Premium Economy cabin on its newest A380 aircraft.

The airline received its newest A380 aircraft from Airbus’ Hamburg facility in late December, and its remaining order of 5 A380s will also be delivered with premium economy cabins through 2021 and 2022. The new premium economy seats will also be installed on some Emirates Boeing 777X aircraft which are due to join the fleet in 2023.

“The Emirates A380 is already one of the most sought-after travel experiences in the skies, and now we’ve made it even better. True to our fly better promise, Emirates continues to invest to offer our customers the best possible experience,” said Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline.

Our First, Business and Economy experiences reset industry standards when they were introduced, and we are confident that our Premium Economy will also make its mark as a distinct premium offering.

The new cabin offers 56 seats in a 2-4-2 layout.

With a generous pitch of up to 40-inches, Emirates’ premium economy cream-coloured leather seat is 19.5 inches wide, and reclines 8 inches into a comfortable cradle position with ample room to stretch out.

Seats also feature 6-way adjustable headrests, calf rests and footrests.

“We love seeing airlines develop new passenger experiences, and we’re delighted to see Emirates’ much anticipated Premium Economy cabin take flight,” said The Travel Authority Group’s CEO, Peter Hosper.

Emirates has announced that it will deploy its A380 aircraft featuring new premium economy seats and enhancements across all cabins to London Heathrow.

Interestingly, until more Premium Economy seats enter its inventory, the airline intends to offer these as spot upgrades for its valued customers on a discretionary basis.

Cathay Pacific’s ‘Hong Kong Flavours’

Cathay Pacific believes there’s no taste like home and, to make the point, the airline has rolled out a new ‘Hong Kong Flavours’ dining concept in all classes.

What should hungry passengers expect?

How about wok-fried lobster in broth with crispy and steamed rice? Or fish ball and fish cake flat rice noodle soup? Soy-braised chicken with Chinese sausage on steamed jasmine rice?

Fish ball and fish cake flat rice noodle soup.

Yum.

Launched to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of the city’s rich gastronomic traditions, Hong Kong Flavours features a variety of local specialities available in all cabin classes on long-haul routes from the airline’s home hub.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Customer Experience and Design, Vivian Lo, said that for Hong Kong people, the dishes convey a feeling of home, while also representing a tasty introduction of authentic local flavours for those visiting from abroad.

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that people from Hong Kong are crazy about food; and as Hong Kong’s home airline, it is important that our inflight dining reflects our heritage,” she said.

Menu highlights in First Class include braised abalone with flower shiitake and choy sum-layered bean curd, while Business Class passengers can look forward to dishes such as roasted duck with lai fun rice noodles in soup and Hong Kong-style milk tea pudding with tapioca pearls.

Passengers in Premium Economy Class have the option of tasting, among other options, steamed halibut with Tai O preserved mustard greens and steamed jasmine rice as well as yin yang fried rice. Meanwhile, dishes served in Economy Class include Hong Kong-style seafood curry rice.

Enhancements have also been made to the airline’s in-flight beverage program with a premium range of Chinese teas including jasmine, oolong and pu’er from renowned local tea purveyor Fook Ming Tong being rolled out progressively in Economy Class.

Finally, to celebrate the Year of the Pig, Cathay Pacific will be serving a selection of auspicious dishes over the Chinese New Year period and throughout February. These special festive offerings include braised garoupa with bean curd and shiitake mushrooms and E fu noodle soup with crab meat sauce.

Hong Kong Flavours is Cathay Pacific’s newest inflight dining concept and follows on from the summer launch of the airline’s well-received restaurant-style Business Class service, which is being introduced on all long-haul flights.

JUST BACK FROM: CANADA

Senior Corporate Consultant, Julia Trinh, recently returned from a familiarisation trip to Canada with our good friends at Air Canada and Destination British Columbia.

“Experiences like this ensure that our people have their fingers on the pulse, and nurture professional relationships with our suppliers that benefit all of our clients”, says says The Travel Authority Group’s Managing Director, Peter Hosper.

Air Canada’s Boeing 777 Premium Economy cabin

Julia travelled in Air Canada’s Premium Economy and Economy class cabins in October 2018, and stayed at:

  • Fairmont Chateau Whistler
  • Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites
  • Pan Pacific Vancouver
  • Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre

Fairmont Chateau Whistler

Julia also undertook hotel inspections at the following properties.

In Whistler:

  • The Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler
  • Hilton Whistler Resort & Spa

In Vancouver:

  • Georgian Court Hotel
  • The Hampton Inn and Suites Vancouver Downtown
  • Rosewood Hotel Georgia
  • St Regis Hotel
  • Rosedale on Robson Suite Hotel
  • OPUS Vancouver

Julia departed Sydney on Air Canada flight AC34 operated by a Boeing 777-200LR (Long range) aircraft, and was very fortunate to receive an upgrade to the airline’s Premium Economy class. We asked Julia about her Premium Economy experience.

“I was in an aisle seat (13C) in the Premium Economy cabin which has a 2-4-2 seat configuration. The seat width was much more generous than economy at 20 inches (between armrests), and each seat was equipped with personal seat-back entertainment screens.

“For lunch, I enjoyed a warm Kungpao Chicken meal with drinks. A snack was offered midway through the flight and breakfast was served a couple of hours before landing in Vancouver. The Air Canada staff were friendly and efficient; food and facilities on board were excellent and made the 14 hours pass by comfortably”, said Julia.

Air Canada’s Premium Economy seat and service also features:

  • Priority boarding, check-in and baggage handling
  • Greater recline than Economy Class
  • 38-inch seat pitch with ample room to stretch out
  • A single-pin audio jack for your own headset or complimentary earphones
  • A USB port
  • In-seat power at every seat
  • Adjustable headrest, a comfortable pillow and blanket
  • Personal amenity kit

On arrival, Julia and her companions were transferred from Vancouver Airport to Whistler (about a 90-minute drive) by Landsea Charters.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler

In Whistler, we checked into The Fairmont Chateau Whistler and the rest of the afternoon was at our leisure. I went for a 5 kilometre walk around the Lost Lake, and the scenery was so picturesque.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler is beautiful, and we inspected a few different room types, all with stunning views. This iconic, luxury mountain hotel is nestled at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, has has an on-site golf course, and offers exceptional dining in restaurants like The Wildflower and The Grill Room.

Deluxe Slopeside View Room

At the time of Julia’s stay, the hotel’s leading room type—Alpine Suites—were undergoing renovations to modernise the decor. Renovations were expected to be completed by mid-December 2018.

The property is home to Vida Spa, and also offers the ‘Fairmont Gold’ experience that starts with a private Fairmont Gold reception area on the 8th floor, access to the Fairmont Gold Lounge, Fairmont Gold concierge services and Gold standard accommodation.
