The latest announcement from the QT hotel group points to the 11th hotel in the group of QT properties across Australia and New Zealand slated for Adelaide.

QT’s first foray into South Australia will take shape at 62 Currie St in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD.

A design-led hotel with a luxurious and quirky flair, complemented by a distinctive signature service, QT Adelaide will be the city’s first lifestyle hotel, bringing a unique offering and a sweeping rooftop bar to the market.

A unique mixed-use offering to Adelaide’s premier entertainment precinct—known for its hip bars and renowned restaurants—the $180 million development will incorporate QT’s latest F&B offerings, and feature 200 guest rooms and extensive conferencing and events facilities.

Construction is likely to commence by the end of 2019.

The QT group of hotels is on a strong growth trajectory, with QT Queenstown opening in December 2017 and
QT Perth in July 2018. QT Auckland is scheduled to open in 2020, followed by QT Parramatta and QT
Adelaide in 2021.

Spotlight On: Majestic Princess

Claire Winnel, Manager of The Cruise & Travel Authority Terrigal, was recently invited to inspect the newest member of the Princess Cruises fleet, Majestic Princess.

Spotlight On: Silversea’s Silver Muse

Karen Knight, Manager of The Cruise & Travel Authority Sydney had the very great pleasure of being invited aboard Silversea’s stunning Silver Muse during her inaugural visit to Sydney in January.

“I was thrilled to be invited to inspect Silver Muse, Silversea’s newest flagship”, said Karen.

“This beautiful ship came into service in 2017 and combines the small ship feeling with a spacious and classy interior beautifully”, she adds.

Being Silver Muse’s first visit to Australia every cabin was occupied, but Karen was able to inspect all dining and public areas on each of her decks.

From casual dining in The Grill, and the Asian and Italian inspired restaurants Indochine and La Terrazza, to the tapas-style dishes in the Silver Note where you can dine while listening to jazz and blues, Silver Muse has just about every whim covered”, says Karen.

“I was very impressed by Silver Muse. With a maximum of 596 guests, and 411 crew, the guest-to-staff ratio is very good. We were treated to a lovely three-course meal in the main dining area, and the service and food were impeccable.

“And for the ship geeks, the tonnage is 40,700, the length is 212.8m and the speed is 19.8 knots”, notes Karen.

Qantas Green Ambitions Driving Digital Changes

An announcement this month from the Qantas Group points to the airline’s plan to cut the amount of waste it sends to landfill by 75% by the end of 2021.

In doing so, Qantas will remove unnecessary paper, such as boarding passes and operational manuals, by going digital. Frequent flyer cards are also set to shift online. The advice we have received from Qantas does not, at this time, stipulate a date for the phasing out of paper boarding passes.

The environmental push will see some 100 million single-use plastic items per annum removed from flights and lounges by end-2020 in what Qantas claims is the most ambitious waste reduction target of any major airline globally.

Announcing the plan as part of the national carrier’s half-year results, Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said that business had a responsibility to lead on environmental issues.

“In the process of carrying 50 million people each year, we deal with more than 30,000 tonnes of waste. That’s the same weight as about eighty 747 jumbos,” said Mr Joyce.

In targeting the removal of 100 million single use plastic items each year, the Group will replace 45 million plastic cups, 30 million cutlery sets, 21 million coffee cups and 4 million headrest covers with sustainable alternatives by end-2020.

Airlines are legally required to dispose of some materials permanently, such as quarantined food from international flights and hazardous materials. With support from industry and regulators, the Group believes it can ultimately reduce the volume of this regulated waste as well.

UNITED AIRLINES ADDS PREMIUM SEATS

United Airlines has announced the next step in its commitment to making more customers more comfortable by adding more than 1,600 United Polaris® business class and United First seats to nearly 250 international and domestic aircraft.

“In an era where many airlines are adding seats to their aircraft to crowd more passengers onto the plane, we’re re-configuring more than 100 of our aircraft and doing exactly the opposite – for the benefit of our customers,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer.

In the next several weeks, United will introduce to its fleet the first of 21 reconfigured Boeing 767-300ER aircraft featuring 16 additional United Polaris business seats in the premium cabin – a more than 50 percent increase in all-aisle-access seating – bringing the total premium cabin seat count to 46.

“We’ve been really impressed with United’s investment in and roll-out of its premium product, particularly on its trans-Pacific routes”, says The Travel Authority Group’s Managing Director, Peter Hosper.

“We expect these additional Polaris business class and United First seats to be upgrade-friendly, which is terrific for frequent United flyers. They’ll also be very attractive to new United customers. It’s a great move by the airline”, added Hosper.

The newly reconfigured aircraft will also feature 22 United® Premium Plus seats; 47 Economy Plus® seats and 52 Economy seats.

United will first operate the reconfigured 767 – which will feature the highest proportion of premium seats on any widebody operated by any U.S. carrier – between Newark/New York and London, offering 50 percent more premium seats in the largest premium route in the world.

The airline expects to introduce all the reconfigured aircraft to its fleet by the end of next year.

Emirates is Heading to Porto

Emirates has announced it will commence a four-times weekly service between Dubai and Portugal’s second largest city, Porto, from 02 July 2019.

Porto will become Emirates’ second destination in Portugal after its capital, Lisbon, which the airline currently serves with two flights a day.

“This will be a popular option for the premium leisure crowd”, said The Travel Authority Group’s Managing Director, Peter Hosper.

“We’re seeing growth in bookings to Portugal. These one-stop services will bring Porto and destinations along Portugal’s northern coast into focus for many Australian travellers, especially with the great value launch fares”, added Hosper.

Porto services will be operated by a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in a three class cabin configuration, offering eight private First Class suites, 42 lie-flat seats in Business Class, and 310 in Economy Class.

The flight between Dubai and Porto will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, departing Dubai as EK197 at 09:15am, arriving in Porto at 14:30.

The return service, EK198, departs Porto at 17:35, landing in Dubai at 04:15am the following morning. The schedule provides convenient connections to Emirates’ flights to both Melbourne and Sydney.
