THE US Government has announced it will no longer process applications for its Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) in real-time.

“This is a really significant change to a process that was introduced in 2007”, says The Travel Authority Group’s Managing Director, Peter Hosper.

“We urge all of our clients travelling to the US to apply for their ESTAs as soon as their flights are confirmed”, added Hosper.

The guidelines for the system have always recommended that applications be lodged at least 72 hours before travelling, but in many cases approvals were almost instant meaning some passengers were able to obtain ESTAs at the airport if they had forgotten to do so earlier.

According to a note on the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website, however, ‘real-time applications will no longer be available, and arriving at the airport without a previously approved ESTA will result in being denied boarding.’

The Department said recent enhancements to the ESTA process had made querying application status much smoother, urging travellers to use the official site at esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta

Heritage Line has announced the launch of its new 10-suite vessel Ylang plying the unspoiled waters of Lan Ha Bay, a quiet extension of Vietnam’s famed Halong Bay.

Ylang will depart on its maiden voyage three-days/two-nights voyage on 17 August 2019.

The cruise will include wonderful excursions from cycling to hiking on Cat Ba island, and an exploration of a remote Lan Ha Bay fishing village. The itinerary also includes a half-day “at your own pace and choice” to indulge in some swimming, kayaking or spa and yoga.

Ylang will set sail from a pier on the small island Cat Hai near the city of Hai Phong (approx. 90 minutes drive from Hanoi) and is the only dedicated two-night luxury vessel in this region.

Local artisans contributed to Ylang’s decoration so Ylang features a splendid blend of Asian-Vietnamese design with Indochinese details.

Of the 10 suites aboard, four are high-end Regent Suites with floor space of up to 54sqm. The front facing premium suites feature a Jacuzzi on their balcony.

Heritage Line has started begun to offer contractual rates with launch discounts of up to 20% to accredited business partners like The Travel Authority Group if you book before 28 February 2019.

Senior Corporate Consultant, Julia Trinh, recently returned from a familiarisation trip to Canada with our good friends at Air Canada and Destination British Columbia.

“Experiences like this ensure that our people have their fingers on the pulse, and nurture professional relationships with our suppliers that benefit all of our clients”, says says The Travel Authority Group’s Managing Director, Peter Hosper.

Air Canada’s Boeing 777 Premium Economy cabin

Julia travelled in Air Canada’s Premium Economy and Economy class cabins in October 2018, and stayed at:

  • Fairmont Chateau Whistler
  • Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites
  • Pan Pacific Vancouver
  • Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre

Julia also undertook hotel inspections at the following properties.

In Whistler:

  • The Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler
  • Hilton Whistler Resort & Spa

In Vancouver:

  • Georgian Court Hotel
  • The Hampton Inn and Suites Vancouver Downtown
  • Rosewood Hotel Georgia
  • St Regis Hotel
  • Rosedale on Robson Suite Hotel
  • OPUS Vancouver

Julia departed Sydney on Air Canada flight AC34 operated by a Boeing 777-200LR (Long range) aircraft, and was very fortunate to receive an upgrade to the airline’s Premium Economy class. We asked Julia about her Premium Economy experience.

“I was in an aisle seat (13C) in the Premium Economy cabin which has a 2-4-2 seat configuration. The seat width was much more generous than economy at 20 inches (between armrests), and each seat was equipped with personal seat-back entertainment screens.

“For lunch, I enjoyed a warm Kungpao Chicken meal with drinks. A snack was offered midway through the flight and breakfast was served a couple of hours before landing in Vancouver. The Air Canada staff were friendly and efficient; food and facilities on board were excellent and made the 14 hours pass by comfortably”, said Julia.

Air Canada’s Premium Economy seat and service also features:

  • Priority boarding, check-in and baggage handling
  • Greater recline than Economy Class
  • 38-inch seat pitch with ample room to stretch out
  • A single-pin audio jack for your own headset or complimentary earphones
  • A USB port
  • In-seat power at every seat
  • Adjustable headrest, a comfortable pillow and blanket
  • Personal amenity kit

On arrival, Julia and her companions were transferred from Vancouver Airport to Whistler (about a 90-minute drive) by Landsea Charters.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler

In Whistler, we checked into The Fairmont Chateau Whistler and the rest of the afternoon was at our leisure. I went for a 5 kilometre walk around the Lost Lake, and the scenery was so picturesque.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler is beautiful, and we inspected a few different room types, all with stunning views. This iconic, luxury mountain hotel is nestled at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, has has an on-site golf course, and offers exceptional dining in restaurants like The Wildflower and The Grill Room.

Deluxe Slopeside View Room

At the time of Julia’s stay, the hotel’s leading room type—Alpine Suites—were undergoing renovations to modernise the decor. Renovations were expected to be completed by mid-December 2018.

The property is home to Vida Spa, and also offers the ‘Fairmont Gold’ experience that starts with a private Fairmont Gold reception area on the 8th floor, access to the Fairmont Gold Lounge, Fairmont Gold concierge services and Gold standard accommodation.
