NEW QANTAS FIRST LOUNGE PLANNED FOR CHANGI

Qantas has announced a multi-million dollar investment in a new First Lounge and an expansion of the airline’s existing Business Lounge at Singapore Changi Airport.

With development due to start in April 2019, the Singapore First Lounge will offer seating for 240 customers, a luxurious design and premium a la carte dining with Asian-inspired menus.

Set to open towards the end of 2019, the new First Lounge will offer seating for 240 customers and be designed to suit the specific needs of transit travellers, with shower facilities, a cocktail bar, open kitchen and menu offerings reflecting the best of Singapore’s vibrant dining culture. It will join Sydney, Melbourne and Los Angeles as Qantas ports with a dedicated First Lounge.

The existing Business Lounge, which opened in 2013, will also be expanded. Combined, the First and Business Lounges will offer seating for more than 800 customers.

Announcing the investment as part of the Qantas Group’s First Quarter trading update, CEO Alan Joyce said the airline’s overall lounge capacity in Singapore would increase by 60 percent.

“With the return of our A380 service to Singapore we’ve got more passengers transiting through our existing lounge and strong demand for travel in premium cabins”, said Joyce.

Singapore is Qantas’ largest hub outside of Australia, carrying more than 20 per cent of the airline’s wide body fleet. Qantas operates over 50 return services in to and out of Changi Airport each week.

UNITED AIRLINES WIPES OUT SURFBOARD FEES

To celebrate California recently naming surfing as the state’s official sport, United Airlines— California’s global airline, is getting on board and removing service fees for surfboards for customers travelling to or from California.

Customers travelling with surfboards, wakeboards or paddleboards on direct United Airlines or United Express itineraries that originate or end at any California airport will not have to pay the previous $150 or $200 service fee to check these items.

Standard checked-bag fees only will apply.

To help preserve California’s coast and oceans, United is donating $50,000 to Sustainable Surf, a California-based environmental nonprofit that operates as an innovation lab using surfing as a force for good—to solve the ocean health crisis by 2050.

“United and surfing are as ‘California’ as can be”, says The Travel Authority Group’s Managing Director, Peter Hosper.

“Australians travelling with their boards to California’s iconic breaks will love this initiative”, adds Peter.

Janet Lamkin, United’s president for California said, “California made it official: surfing is our state sport. We want to make it easier for customers to surf our beautiful beaches, whether they’re visiting or call the Golden State home.”

“This partnership continues our commitment to the environment by supporting an organisation like Sustainable Surf, which helps keep our beaches beautiful”, added Janet.

About Sustainable Surf
Sustainable Surf is a California-based environmental nonprofit organisation – that protects and regenerates ocean health by shifting people to a more ocean friendly, low-carbon, lifestyle. Sustainable Surf operates as an innovation lab in partnership with leading brands, organisations and ambassadors to authentically harness the mass appeal of “surf culture”, to inspire and activate people all around the world to start making more sustainable lifestyle choices on a daily basis.

EXPLORE HIDDEN MYANMAR

Myanmar is a land of rivers. Not just the legendary Irrawaddy river, navigable for 1000 miles, or its main tributary the Chindwin river, navigable for 600 miles, but other rivers too.

Here, nearly all movement of people and goods, not to mention invaders, have travelled by river for more than a thousand years. And in British colonial times, the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company launched 1,200 vessels and became the largest fleet of privately owned ships the world has ever seen.

Pandaw Cruises offer explorations of Myanmar’s waterways on ships based on the original Irrawaddy Flotilla Company fleet.

The Pandaw experience is all about exploring remote and often hard-to-navigate rivers and coasts in specially-designed luxury small ships hand-crafted in brass and teak.

If you’ve been inspired by Peter Hosper’s Myanmar recollections, why not consider these fabulous Pandaw explorations?

MANDALAY TO PAGAN FOUR NIGHT CRUISE

A convenient four-night cruise on the irresistible Irrawaddy River from Mandalay to Pagan discovering the ancient Royal capitals, riverside villages, lively local markets and stunning scenery and sunsets.

4 Nights from US$1,197 per person, twin/double share.
Save up to 10% and no single supplement on selected dates.

THE GREAT IRRAWADDY DELTA

The Irrawaddy Delta covers an area of over 1000 square miles with Rangoon, its most famous port and capital of all Burma from 1886 to 2005. Originally a vast inhabited wetland and jungle, much of it was cleared and cultivated by the British who annexed Lower Burma in 1855.

It subsequently became the rice basket of Asia, effectively feeding much of the Indian Raj.

This 7-night itinerary enables relaxed exploration of this fascinating region, starting and returning to Rangoon.

7 Nights from US$1,905.30 per person, twin/double share.
Save up to 10% and no single supplement on selected dates.

THE GOLDEN LAND

Sailing through the heart of ‘Middle Myanmar’, you will pass through a varying landscape – from the lush teak plantations around Prome to the desert country south of Pagan.

Visit a number of small villages and towns and see local agriculture and manufacturing at first hand. These places are remote from the modern world and offer a glimpse of a timeless, lost Myanmar far from the usual tourist track.

10 Nights from US$3,856.50 per person, twin/double share.
Save up to 10% and no single supplement on selected dates.
